ACROSS THE NULLABOR FROM CEDUNA TO SOUTH AUSTRALIAN / WESTERN AUSTRALIAN BORDER

Several sites have been omitted due to being either closed due to unstable cliffs, unsuitable for overnight camping, truck stops or dog areas. Note: Fuel is no longer available at Fowlers Bay or Yalata.

15th February 2011 - Koonibba Rest Area - 36k West of Ceduna - 40k East of Penong - Mainly a truck area. Some off track parking, bins, gravel, level, limited shade -

15th February 2011 - Cactus Beach Sinclair Point - 21k South of Penong. Camping is among sand dunes no where near beach or jetty. Access road from highway is 16k of terrible corrugated, pot-holed road. There is limited shade at the camping area. Further on there is a long jetty, a shelter shed and an enclosed swimming pool. Make sure you take your own drinking water

15th February 2011 - Cohen Rest Area - 16k West Penong - 63k East Nundroo. A large level area with some sites well away from the highway, with bins, a table and shade trees

16th February 2011 – Fowlers Bay – See entry under 22nd February 2011 - Fowlers Bay – West Coast – South Australia

23rd February 2011 – Nundroo East Rest Area – 69k West of Penong – 10k East of Nundroo. – A small level area with a bin, a table, and some shade. There is some off track parking and a road along the fence line.

23rd February 2011 - Kidnippy Rest Area - 19k West Of Nundroo - 33k East Of Yalata. A very large area well off the highway that is level and well shaded – some tracks are a bit sandy but there are plenty of options.

23rd February 2011 - Colona Rest Area - 27k West Of Nundroo - 25k East Of Yalata. This is a small level area with limited shade. There are some sandy spots and access to the fence line is limited. There has never been a shower at this site.

24th February 2011 - Yalata West Rest Area – 21k West of Yalata – 70k East of Nullabor - There is a small area away from the Truck Parking Area with some shade. There is tank water not suitable for drinking and not much else. Truck noise may be a problem

24th February 2011 - 222k Peg Rest Area - 54k West Yalata - 37k East Nullabor Roadhouse. A table and bins are provided at this rest area on the southern side of the highway. There is a larger area behind the fence but be aware of the low branches. All sites are level and shaded

West Coast – South Australia

24th February 2011 - 164k Peg Rest Area 20k West Nullabor Roadhouse - 164k East Border Village. On the Southern side of the highway, there are several individual sites amongst the shrubs that are level with limited shade, bins and a table. There are further sites along the track behind the rest area about 200m further on that are cleaner and quieter.

25th February 2011 - 157k Peg Rest Area - 27k West Nullabor Roadhouse - 157k East Border Village – Another reasonable overnight resting area that is level but has no shade. There are plenty of sites away from the actual entrance of the Rest Area.

25th February 2011 - Scenic Lookout - 133k Peg - 51k West Nullabor Roadhouse - 133k West Border Village. A “Must Look” spot on the trip across the Nullabor. A great photo opportunity of the cliffs and ocean. The parking area is small and windy and not suitable for overnight camping. This site may be an alternative to “Head of Bite” viewing area during the whale season.

25th February 2011 – 81k Peg Rest Area – 103k West Nullabor Roadhouse – 81k East Border Village – A very large area with a shelter shed, tables and bins with plenty of camping areas away from the entrance. Shrubs provide some protection at this level site with no views.

25th February 2011 - Bunda Cliffs Scenic Lookout - 109k West Nullabor Roadhouse - 75k East Border Village. Another great photo opportunity to take photos of the cliffs. The parking area is small with a table and open to the elements and not suitable for overnight camping. This is another site that may be an alternative to “Head of Bite” viewing area during the whale season.

25th February 2011- Scenic Lookout (25k Peg) - 159k West Nullabor Roadhouse - 25k East Border Village. Behind the gravel piles, this truck stop offers more great views of the Nullabor cliffs and Southern Ocean. There is no shade and is not recommended for an overnight camp.

25th February 2011 – The last rest area before reaching the SA / WA Border is 10 Parking Bay. 174k West Nullabor Roadhouse & 10k East Border Village – There is plenty of room behind the shelter shed for camping overnight. The area is level with some shade, bins and tables. A good spot to rest up and get rid of all the left-over fruit and vegetables before reaching Border Village.
