WESTERN AUSTRALIAN REST AREAS

Several sites have been omitted due to being either closed due to unstable cliffs, unsuitable for overnight camping, truck stops or dog areas.

NT / WA BORDER TO PORT HEDLAND & MARBLE BAR


7th May 2005 - The Grotto - 30k South of Wyndham - 1k off the Great Northern Highway (Tarred) – Suitable for small vehicles only, The Grotto has a long drop toilet, no shade and tables under trees. There is a hard walk to the Grotto (140 Steps) but well worth it.

8th May 2005 - Scenic Lookout located 500 Meters East of McPhee Creek, 261k East of Halls Creek. Follow the old tarred road for about 1k to site. There are no facilities at this large flat area with no shade but good views.

8th May 2005 - Spring Creek - 107k North East of Halls Creek and 56k South West of Turkey Creek. This is a large well shaded area beside the creek with tables, bins and BBQ’s. There were no toilets at this site during our visit in 2005. There is plenty of room for big rigs at the top car park.

10th May 2005 - Leycesters Rest - Ord River - 100k North East of Halls Creek and 63k South West of Turkey Creek – This huge area has many different sites with some of them having toilets, bins and shelter sheds. There is limited shade at this overnight rest area on the way across the top of WA.

10th May 2005 - Mary Pool (Mary River) - 180k East of Fitzroy Crossing and 108k South West of Halls Creek. A large area beside a crock infested river. There is plenty of shade at this beaut spot. There are bins, toilets, and semi-permanent water pools. This is a very popular rest area and has a 24 hour limit.

11th May 2005 - Ngumpan Cliff Lookout - 96k East of Fitzroy Crossing and 192k West of Halls Creek - This rest area has no shade other than a shelter shed with tables and bins. The views of the rock formations make a trip to this rest area worthwhile.

19th May 2005 - (RAAF Boab Quarry) This site is found by turning off towards Windjana Gorge National Park approx 44k West of Fitzroy Crossing. Follow Leopold Downs Road for approx 12k until you reach a fork in the road. Take the right hand track for approx 500 Meters. The sign at the turn-off from the Great Northern Highway states 4WD. The road to the quarry is suitable for 2WD's, caravans and motorhomes in the dry. The quarry has some water suitable for swimming and camping areas are plentiful. Recommended for a quiet time and there is plenty of birds and wildlife.

21st May 2005 - Ellendale Rest Area - 125k South East of Derby Turnoff and 88k West of Fitzroy Crossing – 4 shelter sheds, limited shade, rubbish bins, BBQ's and long drop toilets are all here at this 24 hour rest area that has good views of surrounding plains.

22nd May 2005 - The Boab Rest Area - 55k South East of the Derby Turnoff - 158k West Fitzroy Crossing – Another 24 Hour rest area with tables and seats under the boab tree. There are no other facilities at this rest area.

25th May 2005 - Nillibubbica Rest Area - 71k East of Roebuck Roadhouse and 60k West of Willare Bridge Roadhouse – A 24 Hour rest area that has some road noise. This is a large area with shelter sheds, a long drop toilet, BBQ's and bins. There is limited shade around the perimeter.

6th June 2005 - Goldwire Rest Area - 168k North East of Sandfire Roadhouse and 121k South East of Roebuck Roadhouse. There is plenty of room and plenty of shade, a shelter shed, composting toilet with the advantage of being well off the highway at this overnight rest area.

7th June 2005 - Stanley Rest Area - 108k North East of Sandfire Roadhouse and 181k South West of Roebuck Roadhouse and 5k North of Nita Downs Turnoff. Another large flat area with limited shade, bins, BBQ's and shelter sheds. Long drop toilets are provided.

16th June 2005 - De Grey River - 82k East of Port Hedland and 71k South West of Pardoo Roadhouse. Located on the Northern side of the bridge, this rest area is abused by “Squatters” that ignore the limit of 24 hours and make it difficult for genuine travellers to find a spot to spend the night. The toilet has been removed because of consistent vandalism. The sites are well shaded adjacent to the river.

PORT HEDLAND TO WUBIN VIA MEEKATHARRA

21st June 2005 - Bea Bea Creek - 42k North of Auski Roadhouse and 177k South of the North West Coastal Highway Junction. This rest area has plenty of room but is a bit noisy. There are plenty of trees, fire places and tables

27th June 2005 - Mt. Robinson Rest Area - 109k North West of Newman and 86k South East of Auski Roadhouse. Located 800m East of the Highway, this site was burnt out during our visit. However, there was a composting toilet, shelter sheds, bins, and fireplaces. This site would be re-established by now and worth a stop.

WUBIN TO GERALDTON VIA MOROWA


11th July 2005 - Buntine Rocks - 18k North West of Wubin and 25k South East of Latham via Buntine East Road. The road to the campsite is OK but branches overhang in spots. The camping area has bins and BBQ’s. Approx 500m further on are Buntine Rocks which is accessible with a caravan but not suitable for camping.

12th July 2005 - Kalanooka Springs - 30k East Morawa Via Morawa / Yalgoo Road, Munckton Road, Fallon Road, Kalanooka Road and Mungada Road. Although there 16k of dirt road, we enjoyed our stay in this camp site that is surrounded by hills with bins and BBQ's . There is a septic toilet and tank and bore water that is not suitable for drinking.

17th October 2005 - Joker Tunnel - Approx 10k Off Mount Magnet to Geraldton Road 2k East of Yalgoo - On the road to Paynes Find. Turn Right at the sign for 1.7k along a dirt track. This is an interesting Mining Site but not level for camping. If visiting this site, ensure you bring a torch to explore the tunnel.

25th August 2005 - Nerren Nerren Rest Area - 82k North of the Kalbarri turnoff - 46k South of Billabong Roadhouse. There is plenty of shade in this large level area with bush campsites, tables, long drop toilet, and is recommended for an overnight stay.
