KATHERINE TO WESTERN AUSTRALIAN BORDER
VIA VICTORIA HIGHWAY

Several sites have been omitted due to being either closed or unsuitable for overnight camping, truck stops or dog areas.

18th April 2005 - King River (West) Rest Area - 33k South West Katherine - 163k North East Victoria River – There is level room off the rest area along the old highway dirt track as well as a table and fire place. A fairly good area for an overnight stop.

18th April 2005 - Vince Connoly Crossing - Limestone Creek - 58k South West Katherine - 138k North East Victoria River – There is plenty of shade at this large level overnight stop that has two tables. Tank water is available but supply is limited. It would appear that toilets have been added since out visit.

19th April 2005 - Mathison (62 Mile Camp) - 104k South West Katherine - 92k North East Victoria River - NT – 194 – Another large level area with tank water, tables, bins and plenty of shade. It would appear that toilets have been added since out visit.

19th April 2005 - Sullivan Creek - Gregory National Park - 178k South West Katherine 18k East Victoria River. Low trees, very little suitable shade, not much room and water that is available from the creek where crocodiles play are all here if you wish to stay and enjoy the surrounds. We found that the honesty box had been vandalized and decided it may be best to keep moving.

20th April 2005 - Joe Creek - 10k West Victoria River - 90k East Timber Creek – This day area is approx 2k off the highway along a dirt road. At the end is a large parking and turning circle as well as a picnic area – There is one walk for about 1.7k that is a bit rough and steep in spots. The picnic area has tables and a pit toilet. Recommended for a break and a look around.

20th April 2005 - Day - Kuwang Lookout - 57k West Victoria River - 33k East Timber Creek. There is an approx 300m walk to the lookout platform from the day parking area which was disgusting when we visited. The lookout was reasonable but the day parking area is not recommended for a coffee break –

20th April 2005 - Big Horse Creek Campground - Gregory National Park. Located 10k West of Timber Creek and 216k East of Kununurra or - 177k East of the NT/WA Border. Big Horse Campground is a good area with some large camping areas. The toilets are spotless and there is plenty of shade. It is a short walk to the boat ramp and bridge. Look for crocodiles from the bridge and take the opportunity to grab a photo or two.

21st April 2005 - East Baines River Rest Area - 58k West Timber Creek - 130k East NT/WA Border – A small area with shade that has a table and tank water. There was plenty of rubbish when we visited this site.

21th April 2005 - Saddle Creek Rest Area - 117k West Timber Creek - 109k East Kununurra - 70k East NT / WA Border. This area is large and has some shade. Although sloping, a suitable site may be found for an overnight stay. There are toilets, tank water, tables and fireplaces.

22nd April 2005 - NT/WA Border Checkpoint - 185k West Timber Creek - 44k East Kununurra - A place to stop and get rid of all that good food that you will have to replace in Kununurra at exorbitant prices.

9th April 2005 - Attack Creek (Stuart Monument). Located 47k North of Three Ways or 86k South of Renner Springs. This 24 hour rest area was re-furbished in 2005 and the improvements include a larger parking area, shelter sheds, tables, BBQ's, rubbish bins and 2 water tanks. Unfortunately, there is no shade at this site

1st October 2004 - Banka Banka Station. – A working cattle station at 74k North of Three Ways or 60k South of Renner Springs is a place to rest-up and have a good long showers. The camping grounds have unpowered grassed sites, scenic walks, swimming, spring water, native flora and fauna, a small kiosk, and scheduled slide shows and talks. Shade is limited at this level, grassy camping site.

9th April 2005 - Newcastle Waters Rest Area. Adjacent to the highway, 25k North of Elliott or 77k South of Dunmarra, just South of Newcastle Waters Turnoff, this narrow rest area has no facilities unless improvements have been made since our last visit in April 2005. Although there is no shade, this area is very popular for travelers.

9th April 2005 - Dunmarra Roadhouse & Caravan Park. With well shaded powered and unpowered sites, a place to stay and relax in the swimming pool and do some washing. Septic toilets, bore water, public phone, and hot showers. The showers are spotless and the sites are well shaded. A kiosk and BBQ are also available at this isolated roadhouse.

16th August 2004 - Daly Waters Pub. Located just 4k West of the Highway, this is a place to be seen. The hotel signs and décor are a great photo opportunity and not to be missed. There is a caravan park with bore water, hot showers, septic toilets and well shaded sites with a shelter shed. Have a meal at the hotel, we recommend the Beef N’ Reef meal and entertainment provided by the local “chook man”

12th April 2005 - Green Park (Now Top O' Town Van Park), Larrimah. A well shaded pool and level camp sites together with hot showers, septic toilets and a laundry are provided at this park. Ask for the special deal regarding fees for multiple nights.

13th April 2005 - South Warloch Rest Area located 41k North of Larrimah or 37k South of Mataranka. This 24 hour roadside rest area has a large circular area around the water tank area at one end.

30th August 2004 - Bridge Creek Rest Area. Situated 24k North of Hayes Creek or 33k South of Adelaide River, Bridge Creek has no facilities and access is off a roundabout, beside the creek. Recommended for an overnight stop.

30th August 2004 - Adelaide River WW2 Cemetery. Only 1k East of Adelaide River, take the time to visit this war memorial for the victims of the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese during WW2.

12th August 2004 - Avon Downs Rest Area - 69k West Camooweal - 66k East Soudan – Situated opposite the Police Station, this large, level, open area has a chemical toilet. The Police Station staff, on occasions, operates a Driver Reviver service.

12th August 2004 - Soudan Rest Area - Barkly Highway - 66k West Avon Downs - 32k East Wunara Store – Other than a bore, there is not much at this overnight camping area. A very large level area with limited shade and that’s about it. However, this is a very popular stop on the road to Barkly Homestead and Three Ways.

13th August 2004 - Wonarah Bore - 56k West Wunara Store - 43k East Barkly Homestead – This is a very large open area with a shelter shed and some bins. There was no water at this camp site when we visited.

13th August 2004 – Barkley Homestead – 187k East of Three Ways –Barkley Homestead – At the intersection of the Tablelands and Barkley Highways. Both roads lead to Daly Waters and both are good sealed roads all the way.

BARKLEY HOMESTEAD TO DALY WATERS VIA CAPE CRAWFORD

13th August 2004 - Kiana Rest Area - 266k North Barkly Homestead - 107k South Cape Crawford – A large level area with shade at the rear of parking area. There is a shelter shed and tank water. If camping under the trees watch out for “Land Mines” (Toilet Paper) -

14th August 2004 - Heartbreak Hotel Campground - Cape Crawford - Junction of Carpentaria & Tablelands Highways – An oasis in the middle of nowhere. We used this as a base to travel to Caranbirini Conservation Reserve - 70k East Cape Crawford where we spent the day exploring the rock formations in the park.

15th August 2004 - Caranbirini Conservation Reserve – Approximately 70k East of Cape Crawford along a sealed road towards Borroloola is Caranbirini Conservation Reserve day area that has some interesting walks among spectacular rock formations. The area has a large shaded parking area with plenty of room for the biggest of rigs. We spent the day here and recommend a visit if in the area –

15th August 2004 - Goanna Creek Rest Area - 39k West Cape Crawford - 230k East Daly Waters – 100m North of Highway – A large reasonably level area with great views over the surrounding landscape with plenty of birdlife. There is a shelter shed and tank water at this overnight camping area.

16th August 2004 - Bullwaddy Rest Area - 179k West Cape Crawford - 90k East Daly Waters. This large rest area has plenty of shade, a shelter shed and tank water. Birds gather around the tank tap and make a good photo opportunity -
